"Sanctuary" is arguably the most famous of Iron Maiden's pre-album singles -- not because it was actually released before their eponymous first album (indeed, this 7" emerged a month after that debut in May 1980), but because it was the most popular of their early tunes to be left off said album. The reasons for this are obvious to anyone familiar with the Iron Maiden sound, as "Sanctuary"'s simple riffs and raw, punk attitude genuinely sounded out of place next to the band's otherwise very metallic material. This also explains why it remains inextricably associated with the unrefined style of original singer Paul Di'Anno. Anyway, when issued as a single, its B-side featured two extremely collectible live cuts recorded at the band's April 3, 1980, Marquee show. First up is the classic "Drifter," captured here in a raucous pre-Killers version complete with an audience shout-along section inspired by the Police's "Walking on the Moon" (shock!), and second comes a spirited cover of Montrose's "I've Got the Fire." ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
