Pittsburgh's progressive duo Zombi tightens up and stretches out their sound even further on their sophomore effort, SURFACE TO AIR. Playing instrumental rock driven by racks of vintage analog synthesizers, muscular bass, and concussive drumming, the duo of Steve Moore and A.E. Paterra shed past comparisons to more obvious influences such as Goblin or John Carpenter soundtracks, and are here moving in a decidedly '80s direction that's stronger than titanium and almost as dense. The five selections on SURFACE TO AIR recall a fantasy session between the powerful, melodic arena-prog of Rush and the swarming drones of Tangerine Dream.
