Performer Notes
  • Personnel: James Cotton (vocals, harmonica); Sam Lawhorn, John Primer (guitar); Pinetop Perkins (piano); Bob Anderson (bass); Sam Lay (drums).
  • Recorded at Acme Recording Studios, Chicago, Illinois.
  • An all-covers album which finds the legendary bluesman James Cotton performing songs by his favorite artists. The band, featuring Pinetop Perkins on piano and ex-Muddy Waters/Butterfield Blues Band drummer Sam Lay is top notch, and Cotton himself sounds energized and loaded for bear.
  • He pays tribute to early influences like Little Walter (great versions of "My Babe" and "Take Me Back"), reaches back in time to Robert Johnson via Elmore James (a down and dirty version of "Dust My Broom"), and does a stunning Jimmy Reed impression on "Honest I Do," complete with squeaky country harp. This may not be Cotton's best album per se, but he most definitely sounds like he's having fun.
