Performer Notes
  • Probably the best studio album by Eric Burdon and the Animals (or the New Animals, as they were occasionally known, to demarcate them from the original Alan Price/Chas Chandler line-up). 1968's THE TWAIN SHALL MEET is gentle yet powerful R&B-laced psychedelic pop as good as anything that was being made in Burdon's adopted hometown of San Francisco that year.
  • The opening "Monterey" is an engaging rewrite of the previous year's hit "San Franciscan Nights," and the album's other hit single, "Sky Pilot," is one of Burdon's best performances ever. The remaining six tracks take their time to unfold, but there's no aimless jamming or time-wasting repetition; every song is exactly as long as it needs to be. While many denigrate this era of Burdon's career in favor of what had come before, THE TWAIN SHALL MEET shows that Burdon made some powerful, lasting music in this period.
Professional Reviews
Mojo (Publisher) (12/00, p.51) - "...Represents the more focussed side of The New Animals' sprawling compositions, which featured electric sitar, harpsichords, violins, spoken interludes and bagpipes....Burdon's voice adding conviction..."
