  • Despite having appeared on the stage of Nashville's Ryman Auditorium in 1945 as one of Bill Monroe's most legendary Bluegrass Boys, Earl Scruggs never actually headlined his own show there until 2007. Backed by his Family & Friends band, Scruggs--at the tender age of 83--rips into his banjo neck with the expressive three-fingered style that changed the course of American music with nary a beat skipped. The band--charged with the unenviable task of keeping up with Scruggs's breakneck pace--match the legend lick for lick, most notably dobro ace Rob Ickes and guitarist Randy Scruggs (Earl's son). Also featuring Gary Scruggs, Hoot Hester, John Jorgenson, and Jon Randall, the loose set brings a rollicking just-a-bunch-of-guys-jamming air to the most hallowed stage in countrydom.
  • The night has many winners--including Scruggs faves like "Ballad of Jed Clampett" and "Foggy Mountain Breakdown," Appalachian standards like "Soldier's Joy" and "In the Pines," and the Carter Family's "You Are My Flower," featuring Scruggs on acoustic guitar. Bluegrass purists be warned: Scruggs & Co. throw some curves via Dylan's "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere," drums, and cameos by an electric guitar and a clarinet.
Professional Reviews
Dirty Linen (p.39) - "[I]t's Earl Scruggs' masterful three-finger banjo picking that really shines. Though he was 83 years old at the time of the concert, he's lost none of the passion or imagination of his groundbreaking playing of the past."
