Most entries in the extensive VANGUARD VISIONARIES series pick songs from the entirety of the artists' tenure with the label, but although Oregon spent nearly all of the 1970s at Vanguard, this 10-track anthology is plucked solely from the band's 1972-74 output, covering the albums MUSIC OF ANOTHER PRESENT ERA, DISTANT HILLS, and WINTER LIGHT. Not only are they the band's three strongest albums, but these sets define the prototypical Oregon sound, incorporating world music forms into mellow acoustic jazz, and sounding like the missing link between John Fahey and modern new-age music.
