Performer Notes
  • Solo performer: Bradfield (piano).
  • Personnel: Bradfield (piano).
  • Recording information: Clarity Productions, Montreal, Quebec, Canada (2000).
  • Pianist Bradfield set out to capture, though music, the essence of human virtue, including humility, courage, and forgiveness. The seven mitigating virtues (and seven deadly sins) are common to Western art, literature, and music. However, Bradfield makes no reference to these here. Instead, he offers his own definition of virtue through each of these 13 solo piano compositions.
  • For example, "Resilience" uses strident chords and a vigorous repeating motif to demonstrate the power of human fortitude. "Patience" is more relaxed and soothing but it also carries with it a determined melody. Not surprisingly, the last piece on the album "Serenity" is calm and tranquil. On this track, Bradfield hypnotizes the listener with his gentle touch and cascading arpeggios. All of these pieces center on themes of goodness, strength, and wisdom. In a strict musical sense, these compositions could be seen as the scaled down, pop incarnation of the late-19th-century tone poem.
