  • With WEARING THE TIME, singer-songwriter Tom Paxton was newly signed to the great alt-country-Americana indie Sugar Hill Records. On this album he delivered his most assured and excellent studio album since 1977's NEW SONGS FROM THE BRIARPATCH. The credits are a little wariness-inducing at first, featuring a total of 14 singers and musicians besides Paxton--including Iris Dement, Junior Husky, Suzy Ragsdale, and the legendary steel guitarist Al Perkins--but producer Jim Rooney wisely keeps things simple, leaving Paxton's engaging voice and sly lyrics front and center at all times. The sweetly romantic "Coffee In Bed," one of Paxton's finest love songs, is the highlight, but a new version of the old favorite "Bottle of Wine," and the lovely "Along the Verdigris," with harmonies and guitar by Dement, are nearly as wonderful. This is among the finest albums of Paxton's long and prolific career.
