Performer Notes
  • Audio Mixer: Lou Bradley.
  • Recording information: Tally Studio.
  • Photographer: Myriam Santos.
  • Over 40 years into his unassailable career, Merle Haggard still defines his own Bakersfield sound on Working in Tennessee, which he co-produced with Lou Bradley at his Northern California studio. Haggard doesn't break new ground here, but he settles gracefully and easily back into what he's always done, writing solid songs and visiting a couple of covers, including the classic Johnny and June Cash duet "Jackson" (done here with Haggard's wife, Theresa).
Professional Reviews
Rolling Stone (p.68) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he album -- recorded at Haggard's California ranch -- benefits from a relaxed, among-friends vibe..."

Spin (p.74) - "WORKING IN TENNESSEE glides along on its Bakersfield groove with the greatest of ease..."

Billboard (p.36) - "[A] remake of 'Workin' Man Blues' is bolstered by some fine singing and picking by Willie Nelson..."

Mojo (Publisher) (p.99) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Hag's emerged with a release that impresses as he moves from the Western Swing of the title track to the sunnyside-up of 'Down On The Houseboat'..."

Record Collector (magazine) (p.94) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "It's mostly Haggard originals; expertly crafted celebrations of country's rich heritage, such as the old-timer defiance of 'Too Much Boogie Woogie' or the boozer regret of 'Sometimes I Dream."
